The Voice Of The Revolution: Podcast and Highlights

Wayne Findlay of Findlay & Co Chartered Accountants in Wanaka and Queenstown, recently headed to Sydney for the Accounting Business Expo where he caught up with Mel Power from The Voice of the Revolution Podcast. On air Wayne and Mel talked about Findlay & Co’s Xero Marketing Innovation Award, why his firm ventured into outsourcing, how outsourcing works day-to-day and “first step” tips if you’re considering implementing this business model.

Why outsourcing?

In his characteristic Southern style Wayne explains in the interview how it was “bloody hard to get staff” in Wanaka and Queenstown, where Findlay & Co is based. After dabbling in outsourcing for a while but finding things didn’t work quite as they needed them to, Wayne then discovered the wealth of talent available in the Philippines.

With all of Findlay & Co’s clients now on Xero, but none of the current outsourcing businesses really focussing on Xero, Wayne has been able to work with with the team here at The Backroom where we are all Xero certified and fully up to speed with tax regulations in New Zealand and Australia.

A big part of the work we do here, as Wayne mentions, is prepping accounts for the team in New Zealand so that when Findlay & Co’s accounting team comes to do the job, half the work has been done already.

Client transparency

Findlay & Co’s clients know that behind the scenes a lot of the work is being done by the team in the Philippines. Ultimately this allows Wayne’s team on the ground in New Zealand to spend more one-on-one time with their clients face-to-face and build those relationships. Outsourcing is becoming more and more common in many industries and clients understand the digital world we live in and the idea that you can get work done anywhere in the world.

Staying connected with the team in the Philippines

In terms of how we keep in touch on a daily basis and ensure our team feels as one, despite the geographic distance, Wayne discusses how we are strong advocates for the use of Slack and Camtasia. Slack enables us to keep our communication in one place while Camtasia is a brilliant tool for creating video tutorial content and presentations. Using these tools on a daily basis really opens up personal communication and brings everyone a lot closer together, everyone really feels part of the team.

Wayne’s top tips for those considering outsourcing

Be fully on the cloud – to outsource effectively you really need to make the most of cloud accounting tools.

Look at your workflow – good systems are essential and clear lines of communication.
Good software – use Xero to it’s utmost – reporting, XPM.
Good training – sharing of any webinars relevant to the New Zealand and Australian business environment, creation of induction programmes via Camtasia.
Communication – not just online but also face-to-face is essential, regular meet ups both in the Philippines and in New Zealand.
